On the afternoon of December 23, 2025, Prof. JIANG Guibin, a CAS member, from the Research Center for Eco-Environmental Sciences, Chinese Academy of Sciences, visited the Institute of Hydrobiology (IHB) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and delivered an academic lecture titled "Study on Emerging Contaminants: From Fundamentals to National Strategy."
In his presentation, Prof. Jiang provided a systematic overview of the research on emerging contaminants, tracing its evolution from scientific understanding to national governance strategies. He emphasized that emerging contaminants are characterized by their high concealment, delayed hazards, and complex management, making their control an essential requirement for China's high-quality socio-economic development.
Prof. Jiang reviewed the foundational development of emerging contaminant research in China, stressing that building a comprehensive research system is key to scientific identification. Drawing from his own research experience, he highlighted China's exploration and breakthroughs in studying persistent organic pollutants (POPs), endocrine disruptors, and other emerging contaminants.
Prof. Jiang further analyzed the technical challenges in managing emerging contaminants. He shared innovative practices from his team, including the development of the world's first high-throughput and multifunctional integrated toxicology analyzer. He also elaborated on China's strategic planning and action plans for emerging contaminanttreatment, emphasizing that strengthening scientific research, improving monitoring networks, enhancing regulatory standards, and promoting green alternatives are core approaches to addressing these challenges.
Finally, Prof. Jiang offered forward-looking insights and recommendations on future research directions, interdisciplinary collaboration, international cooperation, and supporting national ecological and environmental security.
JIANG Guibin is a professor at the Research Center for Eco-Environmental Sciences, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Chairman of the China Association for Instrumental Analysis, inaugural editor-in-chief of the American Chemical Society's E&H journal, a member of the 14th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, and an Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. His research is mainly focused on analytical chemistry and environmental chemistry. His methodical and comprehensive research resulted in significant achievements on analytical development and environmental characterization of persistent organic pollutants (POPs), and the speciation of organometallic compounds, which contributed to the improvement and internationalization of these scientific fields in China.
