Abstract: Though the research of microcystins has been known for more than 70 years in the field of ecology, tremendous developments were made in the past two decades with the emergence of functional microcystin-LR (MC-LR). They are now inevitable tools for applications in ecotoxicology, biological, chemical, and materials fields. Thus, the functionalization of MC-LR promotes development of ecotoxicology in interdisciplinary fields. In this illuminating review, the research progress of functional MC-LR, which is operated based on interdisciplinary technologies, such as chemical synthesis, biosynthesis, and self-assembly technology, in the past two decades was highlighted. This review not only discusses research progress in the functionalization of MC-LR based on interdisciplinary technologies, but also elaborates the design strategies, functional mechanisms, and interdisciplinary applications. Furthermore, chemistry, biology and materials technologies are integrated into study of ecological toxicology, and further facilitate advances of medicine. Moreover, the review addresses the challenges and potential improvements in in-vivo imaging and tracing for development of medical treatment. (C) 2021 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
