The Institute of Hydrobiology (IHB) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences welcomed a group of enthusiastic visitors—students from Class 703 and 704 of the Middle School Affiliated to Central China Normal University (CCNU) on May 12, 2025. The science outreach event, themed "Decoding the Ecological Secrets of the Yangtze River and the Mysteries of Life," aimed to inspire young minds in aquatic biology through hands-on learning while fostering scientific curiosity and environmental awareness.
During the lecture session, WANG Xi from the Museum of Hydrobiological Sciences delivered an engaging talk on pufferfish, covering their morphology, behavior, toxin research, and conservation significance. Students listened attentively and actively participated in discussions.
Guided by staff, the students toured the Museum of Hydrobiological Sciences, IHB History Exhibit, Freshwater Algae Culture Collection, and Scientists' Memorial Exhibition. Highlights included a rare coelacanth specimen—a "living fossil" gifted by Comoros in 1982, with only about 200 existing worldwide and six in China. The visit deepened their understanding of aquatic biodiversity and the urgency of ecological protection.
At the History Exhibit, students learned about IHB’s milestones and scientific achievements, appreciating the dedication of generations of researchers. The Algae Collection showcased diverse species, illustrating their ecological importance, while stories of pioneer scientists in the Memorial Exhibition inspired admiration for scientific pursuits.
IHB remains committed to science education and ecological conservation, nurturing future scientists and environmental stewards. Moving forward, the institute will continue bridging research and education to cultivate a new generation passionate about science and sustainability.
