Prof. Chris Bowler gave an oral presentation entiteld "Genomics-enabled exploration of the secrets of marine diatoms" at IHB.

Prof. Chris Bowler from école Normale Supérieure (ENS) in France was appointed as the Visiting Professorship for Senior International Scientists of Chinese Academy of Sciences on Nov. 19, 2013.  

Dr. Bowler received his PhD in plant molecular biology from University of Ghent, Belgium in 1990 and was a postdoctoral scientist at The Rockefeller University, New York, USA from 1991-1993. From 1994-2002 he was head of the Molecular Plant Biology Laboratory at Stazione Zoologica in Naples, Italy. He has published 140 articles in peer-reviewed journals and his H factor is currently 43. Dr. Bowler’s major interest is in understanding the response of plants and marine diatoms to environmental signals. In plants he cloned the first high pigment genes from tomato and has used cis-genic approaches to improve tomato fruit quality. In marine diatoms he established molecular tools to assess gene function and has played a major role in coordinating the whole genome sequencing of several species. Using functional genomics he has revealed the cellular response of diatoms to nutrients such as iron and nitrogen, to different light wavelengths, and to allelopathic infochemicals. As one of the scientific coordinators of the Tara Oceans expedition, he successfully completed 2.5 year Oceans circumnavigation. He is EMBO Member since 1995 and was awarded the CNRS silver medal in 2009. He is the current Editor of the EMBO Journal, Journal of Phycology, the Plant Cell, Marine Genomics, and Science.

Recommended by IHB, Prof. Chris Bowler was selected as one of the recipients of the CAS Visiting Professorship for Senior International Scientists in recognition of his outstanding contribution and exceptional scholarly merit in diatom biology.
